Who we are

ASM is a Federal Statutory Body established under the Academy of Sciences Malaysia Act 1994 (Act 524) on 1 February 1995. ASM is under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). As such, ASM serves as a platform for knowledge exchange among academia, policymakers, industry and civil society, while driving foresight studies, strategic programmes and science-based initiatives at national, regional and global levels.

Guided by its ethos, “Think Science, Celebrate Technology, Inspire Innovation", ASM works to advance science-driven solutions for society and national development.

The ASM President also serves as the Science, Technology and Innovation Advisor to the Prime Minister and the Nation, reflecting ASM’s role in providing independent, evidence-based advice on matters of national importance.
The 14 functions of ASM as outlined in the Act are as follows:
  1. To promote and foster the development of science, engineering and technology.
  2. To provide a forum for the interchange of ideas among scientists, engineers and technologists.
  3. To promote national awareness, understanding and appreciation of the role of science, engineering and technology in human progress.
  4. To promote creativity among scientists, engineers and technologists.
  5. To promote national self-reliance in the field of science, engineering and technology.
  6. To act as a forum for maintaining awareness on the part of the Government of the significance of the role of science, engineering and technology in the development process of the nation and for bringing national development needs to the attention of scientists, engineers and technologists.
  7. To analyse particular national problems and identify where science, engineering and technology can contribute to their solution and accordingly make recommendations to the Government.
  8. To keep in touch with developments in science, engineering and technology, identify those developments relevant to national needs, and bring such developments to the attention of the Government.
  9. To prepare reports, papers or other documents relating to the national science, engineering and technology policy and make the necessary recommendations to the Government.
  10. To initiate and sponsor multidisciplinary studies related to and necessary for a better understanding of the social and economic implications of science, engineering and technology.
  11. To encourage research and development, education, and training of the appropriate scientific, engineering and technical manpower.
  12. To establish and maintain relations between the Academy and overseas bodies having the same or similar objectives in science, engineering and technology.
  13. To do such other things as may be requested by the Government from time to time.
  14. To do such other acts consistent with this Act as may be required to further the advancement of science, engineering and technology in Malaysia and the welfare and status of the Academy.
